The unusual structure of Ruminococcin C1 antimicrobial peptide confers clinical properties.

2020

The emergence of superbugs developing resistance to antibiotics and the resurgence of microbial infections have led scientists to start an antimicrobial arms race. In this context, we have previously identified an active RiPP, the Ruminococcin C1, naturally produced by Ruminococcus gnavus E1, a symbiont of the healthy human intestinal microbiota. This RiPP, subclassified as a sactipeptide, requires the host digestive system to become active against pathogenic Clostridia and multidrug-resistant strains. Here, we report its unique compact structure on the basis of four intramolecular thioether bridges introduced post-translationally by a specific radical-SAM sactisynthase. This structure con…

"Frater, ave atque vale" (Catull. 101.10): fortuna literaria de una fórmula epigráfica

2011

[EN] In this article we offer an overview of some of the modern authors (specially Tennyson, Swinburne, V. Woolf, G. Moore, C.K. Stead,…

Bowel wall thickening: inquire or not inquire? Our guidelines

2018

Introduction Bowel wall thickening is not an uncommon finding among patient undergoing abdomen CT scan. It may be caused by neoplastic, inflammatory, infectious or ischaemic conditions but also be a normal variant. Although specific radiologic patterns may direct to a precise diagnosis, occasionally misidentification may occur. Thus, in the absence of guidelines, further and not always needed diagnostic procedures (colonoscopy, esophagogastroduodenoscopy or capsule endoscopy) are performed. Patients and methods We conducted a retrospective study on data collected from May 2016 to June 2017. We selected 40 adult patients, admitted in Emergency Department with "abdominal pain" and undergone a…

Ti(iv)-amino triphenolate complexes as effective catalysts for sulfoxidation

2010

C 3 -symmetric Ti (IV) amino triphenolate complexes efficiently catalyze, without previous activation and in excellent yields, the oxidation of sulfides at room temperature, using both CHP and the more environment friendly aqueous hydrogen peroxide as terminal oxidants, with catalyst loadings down to 0.01%. The Ti(IV) catalysts and the intermediate Ti(IV)-peroxo complexes have been characterized in solution by 1H NMR and ESI-MS techniques and via density functional studies.

An execution in medieval Sicily: Computerised tomography scan analysis and 3D reconstruction of an ancient forensic context

2019

The bioarchaeological and forensic approach is increasingly applied in the study of funerary contexts in archaeology. Here, we present a case of an atypical medieval burial recently discovered in Piazza Armerina (Sicily), in which the integrated use of traditional bioarchaeological and forensic anthropology methods was crucial. The skeleton was lying in a prone position and was characterised by a peculiar injury pattern. We recorded six clear stab wound marks on the posterior surface of the sternum. The use of computerised tomography scan and 3D modelling techniques has made it possible to obtain a reliable reconstruction of the cause and modality of death, pointing to the execution of the …

Machine learning classification for COVID19 patients performed on small datasets of CT scans.

2022

In this work we evaluated the possibility of carrying out classifications of the outcome of patients with COVID19 disease through machine learning (ML) techniques working on small datasets of computed tomography (CT) images. In fact, one of the most common problems for medical artificial intelligence (AI) applications is the limited availability of annotated clinical data for model training. In the framework of the artificial intelligence in medicine (AIM) project funded by INFN, we analyzed datasets of CT scans of 79 subjects combined with clinical data containing information relating to positive outcome (no need for intensive care) or poor prognosis (admission into intensive care unit and…

Volatile components from aerial parts of centaurea spinosociliata seenus ssp. Cristata (Bartl.) Dostál and centaurea spinosociliata seenus ssp. spino…

2010

The paper reports on the volatile components oil from aerial parts of two Asteraceae growing wild in Croatia: Centaurea spinosociliata ssp. cristata (syn. Centaurea cristata Bartl. subsp. rabenhorstiana (Sch.Bip.) Nyman) (CSC) and C. spinosociliata ssp. spinosociliata (CSS). The volatile components were obtained by hydrodistillation from selected plants and were determined by the GC-MS system on two fused-silica capillary columns of different polarity. The oil content was 0.08 % (CSC) and 0.07 % (CSS) on a dry weight basis. Altogether 73 compounds were identified accounting for 90.8 % (CSC) and 92.8 % (CSS) of the total oil, that were characterized mainly by hydrocarbons (37.9 %; 30.4 %), s…

PREDICTION OF HARVEST TIME IN PEACH [PRUNUS PERSICA (L.) BATSCH] FRUIT USING THE DA-METER

2015

The aim of this work was to define the most appropriate time of harvesting early ripening peach fruit using destructive and non-destructive quality indexes such as the index of absorbance (IAD), measured with the DA-Meter, a portable equipment able to measure the degradation of chlorophyll in the pericarp. In this context our research was carried out in 2009 and 2010 on several peach cultivars. Total soluble solid content increased while flesh firmness and total acidity decreased with IAD values, but no significant correlation was found between destructive and non-destructive parameters.
